Teddy ISBA has been away on holiday with Mind for You, a holiday service for people with dementia.
“I just got back from a holiday in Pitlochry with MindforYou, an organisation that runs supported holidays for people living with dementia and their carers to enjoy together as an alternative to traditional respite. I really enjoyed staying in the rented dementia friendly holiday home that we had all to ourselves and the home cooked food!
On Monday I travelled with to Kinnaird House, our dementia friendly accommodation in Pitlochry to meet the couples who would be on the holiday with me and the MindforYou staff who are there to assist us every day between 9am – 9pm. The house was in a beautiful setting – perfect for a holiday and it was easy to get there as MindforYou organised and booked all of my travel for me!
After a tasty dinner I enjoyed some highland dancing and sang along to some Andy Stewart and the Corries. It was nice to hear some of my old favourites. When it was time for bed Diana, one of the guests got me ready in my dressing gown and gave me a nice cuddle!
I had a wonderfully relaxing Tuesday morning getting some beauty treatments from Spa Unique, who came to our accommodation to pamper us! It was lovely to get some time out with the carers who knew their loved ones were in experienced, compassionate hands with the MindforYou staff. In the afternoon I got all dressed up in my finest kilt to visit Taymouth Marina Restaurant for lunch, then onto the Scottish Crannog Centre with everybody!
It was nice to see the holidaymakers meeting like – minded people who have similar experiences to them, and I really enjoyed the extended family atmosphere. Making friends who understand dementia is great, especially when they’re as much fun as Amanda and Diana were, as you can see we really had a giggle!
This morning I enjoyed a fantastic cooked breakfast – MindforYou offer a choice of hot or cold breakfast options every morning of the holiday as well as a homemade dinner every evening. I also got to meet a bagpipe player at Blair Castle, which was really exciting! One of the best things about the holidays is that all of the daily excursions (including lunch!) are booked ahead of time which means that days out are much less stressful for everybody.
I had to go and visit some other people at Bield Housing so today was the end of my MindforYou holiday! Before I left we all enjoyed singing along to some of our favourite songs from the musicals – my favourite was the Wizard of Oz. I’ve had a wonderful time meeting new people and enjoying days out together. It’s great to know that you can get as much or as little support as you need from the staff throughout the holiday (they can even find third party personal carers if you need them). I know that I’ve made some friends for life who really understand dementia and I’m looking forward to keeping in touch!
P.S. My friends missed me so much they got another teddy friend to keep them company for the rest of the holiday! I can’t wait to meet Sandy on another holiday this year in Edinburgh or Fife.
